To Paint....or Not to Paint...

Choosing the Right Products

Updated: Jul 22, 2023

Hi everyone and welcome to my newest blog. I am very new at this, so please have patience.

You know, everyone has their own opinion on what painting supplies they like to use. I have tried several different brands of alcohol ink and generally if I run across one that I like, I will stick with it. Kind of like, "If it ain't broke don't fix it." Works for me.

Well, as far as alcohol inks go, there are 2 brands that I always default to and they are "Ranger", which some people refer to as "Tim Holtz", which his title was Creative Director for Ranger Products but as of 2017, he is a Signature Designer. So, he has a line of products and they continue to make more products, metallic and such and more colors. It is a full line of creative colors and ink types. You will never be bored.

The other brand I really enjoy working with is "Pinata" by Jacquard. Pinata colors are rich and it takes less ink to use to get beautiful rich colors. The dye element is more intense. I have also found that Pinata inks are not so vulnerable to UV rays. I have an art gallery and sometimes I put my ceramic pieces in the window and the UV fade the colors. I try to use epoxy resin that is UV safe also, but I do not resin all of my pieces.

Along with the inks, each brand has a "blending solution" used to stretch the colors and move them around to create a beautiful marble look. Ranger brand has "Blending Solution" and Pinata has "Alcohol Ink Claro Extender".

If you have tried the alcohol inks yet, you know that you must use Isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol 91% or higher. 71% will only disappoint you because it isn't strong enough to give you the effect you need. I will be posting product reviews soon and I will be comparing alcohol vs blending solution to prove my point.

There are many other tools you can use with alcohol inks. Pens, stamps, stencils, etc. I have a tutorial on using "Masking" which is really fun. I have also used oil based pen (markers) on top of the painted ink. Such as outlining a flower or putting yellow dots for the center of the flower, or even for signing my name.

I write my blogs to try to give everyone an insight to painting with inks. There are so many different techniques to painting and I hope to share all of them with everyone after I have learned and experimented and confirmed the techniques. This saves YOU the trial and error that I go through to get the results I am looking for.

You can see more links on my "Supplies" page on this website.

But, here is one important thing that I would like to ask of each of you reading this. Please reach out to me and either make a comment or ask a question that you need answers for. I don't know everything, but I will certainly try to answer or find an answer for you. I want to get to know you and you to know me. Like I have mentioned on my website pages, I want to share this passion with you so that you will see how enjoyable alcohol ink is and all the different applications it has.

Please watch for my upcoming "Party" video. "Ink and Drink" (ice tea or drink of your choice). It will be a video of a LIVE class and you will see how much all the ladies enjoy painting so hopefully you will take this class and have fun too. We will be using at least 3 painting techniques and hopefully more if we have time. I will post a "taste" of the class soon. I have designed this video so that you will be encouraged to invite 3 or 4 of your friends over to have a party of your own!

Thanks for joining me and have a great week!
